Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or Ethernet for IPTV streaming: which is best?

Why your connection type matters more than your internet plan for IPTV: 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Wi-Fi vs Ethernet, how to tell which one you use, and the cheapest fixes for buffering.

Short answer

Ethernet is the most stable, ideal for 4K. 5 GHz Wi-Fi is fast and works well when the TV is in the same room or one room away from the router. 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches further but is slower and crowded: it is often the hidden cause of buffering. If you can, plug in a cable; otherwise use 5 GHz.

How to know which one your TV uses

Many routers broadcast two networks, sometimes with “5G” or “5GHz” in the name. On Fire TV, open Settings › Network, highlight your network and press Play/Pause to see the details, including the frequency on recent models. On Google TV, open Settings › Network & Internet and select your network. If the router uses a single name for both bands, it chooses automatically, and a distant TV often ends up on 2.4 GHz.

The cheapest fixes, in order

  1. Connect the TV to the 5 GHz network if it is close enough to the router.
  2. Move the router to a central, raised, open spot, away from the microwave and thick walls.
  3. Plug in Ethernet: for a Fire TV Stick, an Ethernet adapter connects to the power port; most Android TV boxes and TVs have an Ethernet port.
  4. No cable possible? A mesh Wi-Fi point near the TV is better than a basic repeater, which often halves the speed.
  5. Powerline adapters carry the network through electrical wiring: useful in older homes, results vary by installation.

How much speed do you need?

Plan about 10 Mbps per HD screen and 25 Mbps per 4K screen, measured on the TV itself in the evening. Details in our article What internet speed do you need to stream TV? Still buffering with a good connection? See Buffering on Fire TV or Android TV: 10-minute fixes.
